Mentioning salary expectations or requirements prematurely can hurt your chances of getting hired, so only include salary requirements in your cover letter if the employer specifically requests it.

There is no right or wrong on this front, but the safest option is to state that your salary expectations are negotiable depending on the overall compensation and benefits package.

If you are asked to specify a dollar amount, simply provide a range in a sentence similar to “my salary requirement are between $65,000 to $70,000.” You an easily google salary ranges for most roles these days, which are reasonably safe to base your information on.

We recommend that you make mention of money toward the end of your letter, almost as a throwaway line because they asked you to include it.

“I am available to start work with 14 days’ notice, am able to travel domestically, and my salary expectations are in the range of $75,000 -$85,000 plus super.

Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to speak with you in more detail about the value I can add to your organisation during an interview.”
